May is when things really started to get busy here on the farm. We had a few days of unseasonably warm weather where we got a lot of work done and then a few more days of cold weather, especially at night, that frosted a few of our uncovered plants. Thankfully we had extra in the greenhouse to replant.
One of the most important and exciting (for us) parts of this month was an addition to our staff! A long time friend, Erin Skidmore, came on board with us on a part-time basis. Having her skilled labor & cheerful, thoughtful disposition has been an immense help and a beautiful addition to our project. We are so thankful to have some extra hands around here – and even more so since they come along with a wonderful person! Erin will be helping with hands-on projects on the farm one day a week and administration and curriculum development one day a week – including at our Pray, Learn, Grow pilot project in partnership with St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. This will include teaching the congregation the best ways to care for their on-site garden while incorporating worship, learning & creation care into the practice. You’ll see her at our Worship on the Farm potlucks & any planting or harvesting days and maybe a CSA pick up or two if we need extra hands. Be sure to say Hi – she’s a pleasure to know.
Our first two on-farm events happened within the last couple of weeks and we had a great turn out for both! On the 21st we walked around the property, blessed the fields, and enjoyed a rather windy potluck dinner. Last Saturday was our season kick-off Planting Party and it was hot! We are so thankful to all the friends & family, all CSA members, who came out, sweated with us, ate donuts with us, and hopefully avoided sunburn with us. You helped us plant over 500 tomatoes, 500 peppers, 200 eggplants, 400 cucumbers, & 400 sweet potatoes!!
I can’t tell you how much we appreciate the help. What we accomplished in 3 1/2 hrs would have been a multiple day project for Mike and I to do alone, between naps & meals & my off-farm job. Many thanks!
More good news: We have a port-a-potty on the farm for the summer! This means you won’t have to navigate through our house, and I won’t have to clean it! I do, however, promise to keep the port-a-potty clean.
As for our family, Everest only has 2 weeks of preschool left and Magnolia just turned 10 months old!
They keep us busy, to say the least, but they make life better – harder – but better. Sometimes we picture how much work we could get down around here if it wasn’t constantly interrupted…but life would be so much less than it is. I’ll take their smiles & kisses over feeling accomplished any day!
Our 2017 CSA begins soon! We are currently planning for Wednesday, June 7th to be the first pick up of the year (although we may wait a week – the colder spring meant crops are maturing slowly). Pray for rain and a little sunshine to help all our plants burst forth with growth! We are so excited to have things underway.
There are still spots open for those of you wanting to join! Here’s the link: CSA sign up. We welcome you.
